      <image:title>Teaching - Fostering a Love of Nature in Children</image:title>
<image:caption>I love being outdoors. In summer 2019, I had the opportunity to work and live at the Knowlesville Art and Nature (KAN) Center , running outdoor camp programs for kids. One of the KAN Center’s goals is to “instill respect in the natural environment”. An important step in getting the next generation to work for a better and greener future is by having them care. Within the New Brunswick community, I was able to play a role in showing the beauty and importance of nature to children, some of which live in cities and were not familiar with the ‘outdoors’. The type of camps we developed and ran were focused on being connected to nature. The children spent a lot of time playing outside, in open fields, in the forest, and even swimming in a river. This outside play time included games, crafts (e.g. whistles made from sticks and painting), hikes, outdoor skills (e.g. appropriate behaviour in animal encounters presented as a story), orienteering skills (presented as a scavenger hunt with a map), and environmental education. Play is an excellent way to promote learning in children and foster their involvement and excitement of learning. Using basic natural items for crafts and activities (as pictured) helps foster the child’s imagination, allowing them to create something new and also enforces their connection to nature.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I wrote a formal proposal for my project to submit to Opwall, while simultaneously searching for an honours supervisor. I finally teamed up with Dr.Andrew Wright as my supervisor. I ran fundraisers with two other students participating in an Opwall project, to raise funds for our trips. The fundraisers included bake sales and a club night where we partner with a local club. We raised over $1000!</image:caption>

<image:title>The Peruvian Amazon: The River Dolphin Thesis - The Trip.</image:title>
<image:caption>I lived on a boat for 6 weeks in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon with dozens of other students, scientists, and local guides. Every day, twice a day, I went on dolphin surveys to collect data for the long-term data set, while also collecting additional data for my specific project. On the boat surveys, I helped the lead scientist teach the high school students how to record dolphin sightings and how to distinguish between the various behaviours. I also participated in many other surveys, both aquatic and terrestrial. I saw amazing wildlife including caiman, tropical birds, and sloths.</image:caption>

<image:caption>There are two dolphin species in the Peruvian Amazon: the pink river dolphin and the tucuxi dolphin. The goal of my project was to determine which habitats are important to the dolphin’s survival. I wanted to know where each species was found most often and which habitat they use the most for feeding.</image:caption>
