Churchill Manitoba: Belugas, Polar Bears, and Aurora.

Churchill Manitoba is a small Manitoban town that sits on the shore of Hudson Bay. Historically known for being a port city, this town is booming with tourism.

The Churchill River mixes with the salt water of Hudson Bay and creates an estuary, which is home to thousands of beluga whales in the summer. The beluga return every year when the ice melts. The melting ice also brings another marine predator into Churchill: the polar bear. Primarily known to hunt seals, the bears will sometimes hunt beluga. But in the summer, they can most often be seen napping in the rocks of Eskimo Point.

I assisted in the management of filed/drone gear, and recorded flight data for my colleagues while they flew drones from Cape Merry. Being the polar bear capital of the world, when outside of town it is important to stay safe with a bear guard since polar bears will often wander through. Thankfully the only bears we spotted were across the river.

Make it stand out.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

The boat based research involved collecting water samples for eDNA and beluga blow samples.
